Foods to Avoid

Say “No” to These Snacks for Successful Treatment

It’s important to understand that your eating habits will have to change slightly while you’re in orthodontic treatment, but remember, it’s only temporary and your cooperation will pay off!

In most situations, common sense will tell you what to avoid. You’ll need to stay away from hard foods, sticky foods, and foods high in sugar – hard foods can damage or break wires and brackets, sticky foods can get caught between wires and brackets, and sugary foods cause tooth decay and other similar problems.

Examples of Hard Foods to Avoid

  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Hard taco shells
  • French bread
  • Corn on the cob
  • Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
  • Bagels
  • Chips
  • Jolly Ranchers
  • Pizza crust

Examples of Sticky Foods to Avoid

  • Gum (sugar-free or regular)
  • Licorice
  • Sugar Daddies
  • Toffee
  • Tootsie Rolls
  • Caramels
  • Starbursts

Try to minimize your intake of sugary foods like cake, ice cream, cookies, pie, and candy, and only drink sugary beverages once a day, such as soda, sweet tea, Gatorade, and Kool-Aid.
